Final Cut Pro (also known colloquially as FCP) is a non-linear editing software application developed by Macromedia Inc. and then Apple Inc. Final Cut Pro 7 runs on Mac personal computers powered by Mac OS X version 10.5.6 or later and using Intel processors. It is a module of the Final Cut Studio product. The software allows users to log and capture video onto a hard drive (internal or external), where it can be edited, processed, and output to a wide variety of formats.

Before you can begin editing, you will need to make a decision as to which format to shoot your film in. The format chosen will determine the equipment used to edit the video, and also play a large part in how a finished video will look. Final Cut Pro is based on Apple's QuickTime technology, and it is compatible with almost any QuickTime compatible format that is able to be imported or exported. This allows you to work with files created in a wide range of video and photo editing applications. You can use Final Cut Pro to import the following format types: AVI, DV Stream, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and QuickTime movie.

Final Cut Pro also provides native support for DV video by using your computer's FireWire port for the for capture and output of video. And it provides native support for DV CAM, DVCPro, DVCPRO 50 and DVCPro HD.

Besides, Final Cut Pro supports all of the latest broadcast, digital cinema and HD formats.

What's more, You can easily use Final Cut Pro to integrate into existing broadcast and post-production systems. Final Cut Pro offers project interchange support in the following formats: EDL, OMF and the proprietary Final Cut Pro XML interchange format.

However, as the MOV is a video container with different codec when import MOV video to FCP, users have to distinguish if FCP can recognize the video codec, if Final Cur Pro cannot recognize the codec, users can not use FCP to edit the videos.

For example, Video shot by Kodak Zi8 is just the file codec format which Final Cut Pro has trouble to recognize directly. Thus, if Mac users want to edit Kodak Zi8 video with FCP , they have to convert the video first then import Kodak zi8 video to FCP.
